Gray Mouse Lemur

Gray Mouse Lemur

The Gray Mouse Lemur (Microcebus murinus) is a small Strepsirrhine primate, found only on the island of Madagascar. Weighing 58 to 67 grams (2.0 to 2.4 oz), it is the largest mouse lemur, yet smaller than the world's smallest monkey, the Pygmy Marmoset, which ranges between 85 and 140 g (3.0 and 4.9 oz). Its genus, Microcebus, includes the smallest primates in the world. The Gray Mouse Lemur is named for its mouse-like size and coloration.

Fat-tailed Dwarf Lemur

Fat-tailed Dwarf Lemur

The Fat-tailed Dwarf Lemur (Cheirogaleus medius), or Lesser Dwarf Lemur, is one of the smallest primates. It is endemic to Madagascar. Recent research has shown that C. medius hibernates, even though in the tropical winter temperatures remain high. It is the first tropical primate in which hibernation has been demonstrated. However, the Malagasy winter is dry, and it appears that the lemur is avoiding the drought.

Masoala Fork-crowned Lemur

Masoala Fork-crowned Lemur

The Masoala Fork-crowned Lemur (Phaner furcifer), also known as the Eastern Fork-marked Lemur, is found in the coastal forests of northern and western Madagascar. Phaner furcifer subsists on a diet consisting mainly of the gum of trees in temperate deciduous forests. It has become specialized for harvesting this substance. Like most prosimians, it has a "dental comb," which is used to scrape the gum that oozes from insect holes in a tree's surface.
