Tenrecidae

Tenrecidae

Tenrecidae (common name tenrecs) is a family of mammals found on Madagascar and parts of Africa. Tenrecs are widely diverse, resembling hedgehogs, shrews, opossums, mice and even otters, as a result of parallel evolution. They occupy aquatic, arboreal, terrestrial and fossorial environments. Some of these species can be found in the Madagascar dry deciduous forests, including the Greater Hedgehog Tenrec.

Golden mole

Golden mole

Golden moles are small, insectivorous burrowing mammals native to southern Africa. They form the family Chrysochloridae, and so are taxonomically distinct from the true moles. The golden moles bear a remarkable resemblance to the marsupial moles of Australia, so much so that, the marsupial/placental divide notwithstanding, they were once thought to be related, possibly because they are very primitive placentals and because of the many mole like specializations.

Giant Otter Shrew

Giant Otter Shrew

The Giant Otter Shrew (Potamogale velox) is an aquatic, carnivorous tenrec that inhabits the Dzanga-Sangha tropical rainforest of Cameroon, where it lives along streams and in swamps. It is the only member of the genus Potamogale. It is characterized by a long, flat tail, which it uses for swimming by sideways undulation, much like a crocodile. The Giant Otter Shrew feeds underwater on frogs, fish, crabs, and mollusks, which it locates with the thick bristles on its snout.

Potamogalinae

Potamogalinae

Potamogalinae is the subfamily of "otter shrews," a group of riverine mammals in the Tenrecidae family indigenous to Subsaharan Africa. All otter shrews are carnivorous, preying on any aquatic animal they can find with their sensitive whiskers. As their common name suggests, they bear an extreme resemblance to true otters. They move through the water by undulating their tail in a side-to-side motion similar to the motions made by a crocodile swimming.
