It is a remake of the director's Tamil film Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu (1978) with the same cast: Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Sripriya, and Jayachitra. The film became a big hit, due to the music. The director remade the film again, this time in Hindi as Dil-e-Nadaan (1982), starring Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Smita Patil, and Jayapradha, but the film didn't become a hit.
